In 1889 a woodblock-printed picture book was published entitled Ringa Chō (i.e., Brush Drawing Copy Album). It was edited by Takejirō Ueda but the name of the artist was not given. The album’s pictures were intended to be copied or traced by art students. Eleven of the album’s pictures of birds or flowers and birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The anonymous artist drew the shapes of his picture subjects accurately but they were colored only in shades of gray.
